Yelp personal vs business account: what each one does

Two accounts, two logins, and only one of them can touch your business page. What each does, what neither does, and how to tell which one you are in.

Steve Lepore, updated

The short version

  • A personal account and a business account are separate objects with separate credentials, and Yelp will not merge them.
  • Linking the two gives an owner a view of their own page. It transfers no ability to manage it.
  • Claiming a page is free and does not make you an advertiser.
  • A claimed page can revert to unclaimed after 90 days without a sign-in.

A Yelp personal account and a Yelp business account are two separate accounts. They have two separate sets of credentials, they sign in at two different addresses, and Yelp will not combine them. Per Yelp's Support Center article "Can I merge my business account with my personal user account," accessed August 2, 2026, the two cannot be merged, and a business owner cannot use a personal account to manage a business page.

That single fact resolves most of the confusion around these accounts, because the confusion is almost never about how to create one.

Most service businesses we take on already hold both accounts, and the business page is frequently claimed under an email address nobody there still has.Observed

The question that arrives with them is not about signing up. It is about the relationship: which account to use for a given task, what the two have to do with each other, and whether the owner account is the personal account with different permissions attached. It is not. They are separate objects that happen to belong to the same person.

What a personal account does

A personal account is the consumer side of Yelp. Yelp requires one for anything past searching: writing reviews, posting photos, bookmarking businesses into collections, and following other users.

The limit is written into what the account is for. Yelp's Support Center article "What is a user account," accessed August 2, 2026, states that a user account is for personal, non-commercial use and should not be used to promote a business. Yelp permits business owners to hold personal accounts, but those accounts cannot promote the owner's business, and Yelp's guidance is that owners should not review businesses they engage with as part of their own work.

In practice that rules out the two things owners most often try. You cannot answer a review on your own page from your personal account, and you cannot use it to leave reviews for the suppliers, subcontractors, or referral partners you work with.

What a business account does

A business account manages the pages it has claimed. From it you can update your business information, respond to reviews publicly or privately, add photos, track page visits and leads, and buy Yelp Ads or the Upgrade Package.

Two limits are worth stating plainly, because both get assumed the wrong way round.

The account is also not a Yelp login. It manages your pages and does nothing else. It will not let you browse, bookmark, or review.

Linking, and what linking is not

Yelp added the ability to link the two accounts, which is the piece most owners have never been told about.

Per Yelp's Support Center article "How do I link my Yelp for business account with my consumer user account," accessed August 2, 2026, linking gives a business account holder a view of their own page as a prospective customer sees it. Linked accounts carry an access level Yelp labels "Business," "Consumer," or "Business & Consumer," visible from the User Management page on the business side or from Account Settings on the consumer side. Yelp's system will prompt you to link if you are signed in to a claimed business's consumer account.

What linking does not do is the important half. It does not connect the two sets of login credentials, it does not merge the accounts, and it does not give the personal account any ability to manage the page. It is a view, not a permission. Yelp also states the feature is available only in the US.

So the answer to whether the two accounts can be connected is yes, and the answer to whether that connection lets you run the business from your personal login is no. Those are different questions and they get collapsed constantly.

Telling which account you are in

The reliable test is the address, not anything on the screen.

Consumer Yelp is at yelp.com. The business portal is at biz.yelp.com. A business account will not open a consumer session and a personal account will not open the business portal, regardless of which one your browser filled in. If you are looking at a page with a Business Information tab, you are in the business account. If you are looking at your own review history, you are in the personal one.

The two accounts are often registered to different email addresses. A page that was claimed years ago by a former manager, an agency, or a web designer is claimed under their address, not the owner's, and no amount of signing in with the owner's personal credentials will reach it.

Getting a business account, if the page is unclaimed

The claim flow starts at biz.yelp.com/claim, where the button currently reads "Verify my free listing." You search for the business, confirm it is yours, and create business credentials.

The step that actually stops people is verification. Per Yelp's article "How to add a business to Yelp," updated October 2025, claiming completes with a verification by phone call, text message, or an email address on the business's own domain. That means the phone number Yelp already has on the listing needs to be a number you can answer. If it is a disconnected line or an old answering service, the claim stalls there and no amount of retrying the form fixes it. Yelp states most new pages are approved within 24 hours once the process completes.

The specific screens change, and Yelp's own help pages do not always agree with each other about them, so read the current steps from Yelp's claim page rather than from any description of it, including this one.

If the page has already been claimed by someone unreachable, Yelp's stated route is to claim it yourself if the existing account has not been accessed in 90 days, and to contact Yelp support with the business name and city if it cannot be claimed.

The 90-day rule

A business account is not a one-time setup, and this is the detail most likely to cost a business something.

The failure is quiet. Nothing breaks, no notice arrives on the page, and the business goes on appearing in search results while the claim badge disappears and the page becomes available to whoever asks for it next. A calendar reminder to sign in quarterly is the entire fix.

The rule to run

If a person is paid by the business, they need the business account, and no amount of personal account activity substitutes for it. Reviews, photos, and check-ins from an owner's personal account do not manage the page, do not answer a reviewer, and are against Yelp's guidelines when they promote the owner's own business.

If a person is not paid by the business, a personal account is all they will ever need.

Owners who want both should hold both, link them, and keep the business account signed in to at least once a quarter. The link buys visibility into what customers see. It does not buy a shortcut.

Common questions

Can I merge my Yelp personal and business accounts?

No. Yelp does not combine the two, and a personal account cannot manage a business page. You can link them, which gives a business account holder a view of their own page as a customer sees it, but linking does not connect credentials or transfer any ability to manage the page.

Can I manage my business page from my personal account?

No. The two accounts are separate and the business portal will not open from consumer credentials. If your page was claimed under an email address you no longer control, signing in as yourself will not reach it. Yelp's route in that case is to claim the page if the existing account has been inactive for 90 days.

Can I still write reviews as a business owner?

Yes, from a personal account, with limits. Yelp permits owners to hold personal accounts but states they are for personal, non-commercial use. They cannot promote your own business, and Yelp's guidance is not to review businesses you engage with as part of your own work, which rules out suppliers, subcontractors, and referral partners.

How do I tell which account I am signed in to?

Check the address. Consumer Yelp is at yelp.com and the business portal is at biz.yelp.com, and neither set of credentials opens the other. A Business Information tab means you are in the business account. Your own review history means you are in the personal one.

Yelp advertising, run by a certified Yelp partner

Claiming and linking your accounts is free and takes an afternoon. Paid campaigns are a separate decision with a separate threshold.
